When you think of BOTOX, you probably think about its cosmetic benefits. Indeed, it can do much to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. But did you know that it also has some medical applications? In fact, it is becoming an increasingly popular way to address problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).  Just how can BOTOX help with TMJ disorder (TMD)? This blog post explains.

TMD and Your Facial Muscles

TMD directly affects your TMJ, the joint just in front of your ears, which controls movements of your lower jaw. However, people with TMD do not just have jaw problems. You may also notice tension in the muscles throughout your face, and you may be much more likely to engage in bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching). In fact, bruxism is often a major contributing factor to the development of TMD.

How BOTOX Can Help

BOTOX is a brand name of a diluted form of botulinum toxin. When it is strategically injected into the facial muscles, it limits their movements and forces them to relax. Many patients find that, when they receive BOTOX in the muscles that control their jaw, their TMD symptoms are significantly reduced. They also become less likely to engage in teeth grinding and clenching.

What You Should Know About BOTOX for TMD

Here are a few notes to consider if you are thinking about getting BOTOX for your TMJ disorder:

  • It is effective. One study found that around 90% of patients experienced significant symptom relief.
  • It is fast and simple. The process usually takes less than an hour, and no downtime is required afterward. You may start to notice the results within a few days.
  • You may need more than one round of injections. The results of BOTOX can last for several months at a time (3 – 6 or so). For continued effectiveness, you might need to receive periodic injections.
  • It can work with other therapies. BOTOX is effective for symptom relief, but it does not always address the underlying cause of TMD. Your care team may suggest that you also get other therapies to achieve long-lasting relief.

BOTOX can be an effective way to reduce the pain and discomfort of TMJ disorder! Talk to a qualified treatment provider to learn more about it.
