Is Bone Grafting Always Necessary Before Dental Implant Placement?

Replacing lost teeth with dental implants can be a complex process. Some patients need multiple oral surgeries before their new smile is in place. For example, many must undergo a bone grafting procedure. Why is bone grafting often necessary before dental implant placement, and how can you know if you will need a bone graft? This blog post explains some important information.

The Importance of Bone Grafting

Dental implants are able to serve as prosthetic tooth roots because they fuse with the surrounding bone tissue. If the jawbone is too weak or small, the implants simply do not have the support they need to remain strong and stable in the mouth. Dental implant failure could easily occur.

During a bone graft, an oral surgeon strategically places bone material onto your jaw. As your body accepts the grafted material, it can fortify and enlarge the jawbone, enabling it to serve as the strong base of support that is needed for your new teeth.

Does Everyone Need a Bone Graft?

No, not everyone needs a bone graft before they receive dental implants. You might not need this procedure if detailed scans reveal that your bone is of adequate size and strength to accommodate your new tooth roots. This could be true of you if:

  • You have only recently lost your teeth.
  • You have not suffered advanced gum disease.
  • You have not suffered serious facial injuries or other conditions that could adversely affect jawbone health.

On the other hand, it is more likely that you will need a bone graft if:

  • It has been more than a few months since your natural teeth were extracted (the jawbone tends to naturally shrink following tooth removal).
  • You suffered from periodontitis (advanced gum disease) in the past.
  • Your genetics have endowed you with a weak or thin jawbone.
  • Other circumstances have adversely affected the health of your facial bones.

Bone Grafting and Your Treatment Timeline

If your care team informs you that you need a bone graft, they will talk to you about the details of your surgery. Some patients are able to receive dental implants during the same appointment as their bone graft, while others must wait a few months between the procedures. Even if your bone graft will slow down your total treatment timeline, there is no reason to be discouraged. You can be confident that it will increase your chances of enjoying a lifetime of strong and healthy smiles!
